The Department of English in the College of Arts and Sciences at Seton Hall University offers graduate courses to accommodate students with a wide range of career and professional goals.Graduate students have the unique opportunity to pursue a Master of Arts (MA) in English through the “Hub” and “Spoke” program with the option of focusing on Literature, Writing, or Creative Writing.
MA in English, Literature Spoke (30 credits, thesis is required):
12-credit Hub of core requirements and 18-credit Spoke of Literature and Writing courses
The purpose of the Literature Spoke is to prepare students planning to earn a doctoral degree or whose primary interest is in continuing literary study. Students also can pursue careers in college or secondary school teaching.
MA in English, Writing Spoke (30 credits, thesis is optional):
12-credit Hub of core requirements and 18-credit Spoke of Writing and Literature courses
The purpose of the Writing Spoke is to prepare students planning to teach English at the secondary level, those who are already teaching, or those who plan to pursue a career in professional writing.
MA in English, Creative Writing Spoke (30 credits)
12-credit Hub of core requirements and 18-credit spoke of Creative Writingand Literature courses
The purpose of the Creative Writing spoke is to enhance the writing skills of graduate students who are interested in becoming writers, teaching creative writing, or hoping to pursue an MFA or a PhD in creative writing.
The Department of English takes a holistic approach to literary studies in emphasizing both reading and advanced writing skills. Students are given guidance and the opportunity to meet their professional and academic goals with a one-on-one approach, and are encouraged to participate actively in the profession.
The department offers eight Teaching Assistantships to our students that include tuition benefits and a stipend.
