What the Interns Gain from the Program

Student interns at The Lakeview School have a hands-on working experience with our students with multiple disabilities. The exposure to, and experience with adapted equipment, assistive technology and augmentative and alternative communication devices that our students use, provides the intern greater understanding and comfort in using the equipment functionally and routinely throughout the day. Student interns are challenged to use their creativity and knowledge of multiple intelligences to help modify lessons to meet our students’ needs. The knowledge base for student interns grows rapidly and extensively during the internship period as they work within an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary team approach with teachers, occupational, physical and speech therapists, nurses, social workers and administrative staff members. Whenever possible, student interns attend IEP meetings, parent conferences, student staffing meetings, medical and equipment clinics. Interns have also had the opportunity to be employed by the the Lakeview School as seasonal (summer) employees.
