School of Health and Medical Sciences
Program Overview

The challenges and stresses of daily life, aging, building a healthy family life or finding alternatives to chemical dependency are all conflicts that can, at times, be difficult for people to manage. Recognizing that behavioral health and psychiatric services are an important component in the provision of healthcare services in the United States, the School of Health and Medical Sciences offers the General Psychiatry Residency Program. This program, which began in 2007, provides physicians in training with the knowledge, technical experience and humanistic skills necessary to provide high-quality, compassionate patient care.

The multidisciplinary program is divided over the post-graduate years (PGY) 1, 2, 3 and 4 levels. Three residents rotate in the following state-of-the-art hospitals:
•    Trinitas Regional Medical Center
•    JFK Medical Center

Serving as the residency program’s sponsoring institution, Trinitas Regional Medical Center operates one of the most comprehensive departments of behavioral health and psychiatry in New Jersey. Services and a full continuum of care for adults, children, adolescents and their families are offered, as well as inpatient and outpatient assistance for those with various addictions. The department operates a 107-bed facility and provides nearly 200,000 behavioral health visits each year. Trinitas also boasts the only inpatient facility in New Jersey for dually diagnosed mentally ill and developmentally disabled patients and provides outpatient services through this facility as well.

Residents gain ECT training and expertise with a diverse patient population, which includes individuals of every ethnic and cultural background, as well as patients with a wide array of psychopathology. Much of the four-year program is spent at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, where residents complete four months of Internal Medicine at the Williamson Street Campus (the medical/surgical campus) and a psychiatry rotation at the New Point Campus (the psychiatric campus). A two-month Neurology rotation takes place at JFK Medical Center in Edison. The program features training in psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family and group therapy, neuropsychological testing and interviewing techniques. Residents will gain a comfort level in the evaluation and diagnosis of an individualized course of treatment for all patients. Senior residents gain experience as team leaders, working with allied health professionals through interdisciplinary rounds.

Throughout the program, residents are challenged in myriad psychiatry subspecialties and gain experience in a variety treatment modalities. Residents treat their own patients under the supervision of board-certified psychiatrists in inpatient, outpatient, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, substance abuse, child psychiatry, consultation psychiatry and emergency psychiatry.

Residents actively participate in:
•    morning reports, daily;
•    attending rounds, daily;
•    journal club, monthly;
•    lectures and conferences;
•    psychiatry grand rounds;
•    hospital-wide grand rounds lectures; and
•    offsite graduate medical education programs and national conferences (stipends available).

Dedicated to providing residents with a quality learning experience, faculty are clinically experienced, having trained in hospitals around the country and in highly regarded residency programs. Faculty members include psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, creative arts therapists, substance abuse counselors and mental health workers.
