The mission of Bachelor of Science (B.S.) program of Department of Biological Sciences is to equip students with the knowledge of biological principles and empirical research, enriched with critical thinking, reading/writing, information, numeracy proficiency, and oral communication skills. Knowledge of biological sciences is integrated with other scientific disciplines, mathematics and the application of modern technologies. The curriculum prepares students to pursue health related careers, such as medical and dental schools, etc. Together with the School of Health and Medical Sciences, accelerated dual-degree programs for physical therapy, physician assistant and athletic training are also offered. In addition, the curriculum prepares students to pursue graduate science programs as well as science-related careers in educational, industrial and government settings. In summary, the learned knowledge and skills sets enable students to understand living environments, and to become life-long learners in diverse careers. Students contribute to the greater good by developing and sustaining an ethical civilization through medical, biological, and environmental stewardship.

Goal 1: Educate and empower students in classroom setting.

Objective 1: students will learn the principles and concepts of biological systems at molecular, cellular and organismal levels.
Objective 2: students will acquire solid foundation in chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics, and physics, integrate essential principles in these disciplines into biological sciences, and enhance their understanding of various biological disciplines.
Objective 3: students will learn the essential tools to equip them for college life and beyond.

Specifically, students will:

  1. demonstrate understanding of the structure, function and classification of various organisms and biological systems
  2. acquire understanding of chemistry, biochemistry, math, and physics.
  3. demonstrate proficiencies in reading/writing, numeracy, critical thinking, oral communication.
Goal 2: Educate and empower students in laboratory setting.

Objective 1: students will learn essential biological techniques.
Objective 2: students will learn biological research methods.

Specifically, students will:
  1. develop technological literacy in biology.
  2. learn to identify gaps in biological knowledge, formulate and test scientific hypothesis, data analysis, interpretation, and dissemination.
Goal 3: Apply knowledge and skills of Biological Sciences to the Greater Good of Society

Objective 1: acknowledgement of bioscience knowledge and skills as well as the applications of scientific researches
Objective 2: implement the knowledge, skills and values of biological sciences into occupational pursuits
Objective 3: apply biological knowledge and skills responsible to civic, social and/or global issues

Specifically, students will be prepared for one or more of the following goals:
  1. graduate study toward an advanced degree in the biological sciences, i.e., M.S. or Ph.D.
  2. employment in state or federal government service, industry, laboratory or technical work.
  3. advanced study at the professional level.
