Engagement and Collaboration


The Institute of Judaeo-Christian studies forwards its mission through engagement and collaborative programs that inform scholars and theologians and instruct educators, students and the general public about various facets of Jewish-Christian studies and relations, especially those that address complex religious, ethical and social issues and help to promote justice and peace.

Institute Programs and Initiatives

A partial list of the engagement and collaborative programs and initiatives the Institute sponsors and supports includes:

Msgr. Oesterreicher The Annual John M. Oesterreicher Memorial Lecture, an event that brings scholars from all over the world to the Seton Hall University campus to examine the most relevant issues in Jewish-Christian studies and relations

Kinship of Catholics & JewsThe Kinship of Catholics and Jews, a weekly radio program broadcast on WSOU that promotes the shared values of Christians and Jews and is moderated by the Institute’s Director every Sunday morning at 8:30 am on WSOU 89.5 FM

Torah CrownArt exhibitions at Seton Hall University's Walsh Gallery, which are open to the general public at no charge and focus on highlighting the Biblical heritage and the beauty found in various forms of Jewish and Christian art

Director’s Initiatives

In addition to the above-listed engagement and collaborative initiatives, the Institute’s Director, Lawrence E. Frizzell, also forwards our mission regionally, nationally and globally by:

FF & PJPIIProviding counsel to the Holy See in fostering close relations to the Jewish people through his capacity as Consultor to the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews, the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity

GlobeEncouraging interfaith understanding internationally at annual meetings such as the International Conference of Christians and Jews (Austria, Poland), the International Congress on Medieval Studies (United States) and the Catholic Biblical Association (United States)

MapAdvancing interreligious dialogue at regional meetings such as the semi-annual Ecumenical and Interfaith Affairs Committee of the National Catholic Bishops with the Orthodox Union (NYC); the National Council of Synagogues (Baltimore, NYC); and the Interreligious Commission of the Archdiocese of Newark (Rutherford, NJ)

Our Impact

IJCS LogoThe Institute has developed, encouraged and increased the collaborative peace-building efforts among an immeasurable number of Jewish and Christian scholars, theologians, educators, students and the general public our engagement and collaboration programs.

Highlights of the most notable impacts we make through our engagement and collaboration programs include:

  • Forging strong partnerships with the Vatican for more than 60 years through the Institute’s directors, Monsignor John M. Oesterreicher (1953-1993) and The Reverend Dr. Lawrence E. Frizzell (1993-Present)
  • Educating more than 2,000 attendees about current and multifaceted issues in Jewish-Christian studies and relations at annual John M. Oesterreicher Memorial Lectures at Seton Hall University

  • Promoting the shared values of Christians and Jews for 24 years through our weekly radio show, The Kinship of Catholics and Jews, which is broadcast every Sunday at 8:30am on WSOU 89.5, the number one college radio station in the New York metro area that reaches an estimated 120,000 listeners per week
