Congratulations on your acceptance to the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University! We are proud to welcome you to our professional community. Below is important information for newly admitted Diplomacy graduate students that will help you navigate the next steps for enrollment. For your convenience, Catherine Ruby, Ph.D., your first semester advisor, will serve as a primary point of contact for your graduate onboarding with us.

CONFIRM YOUR SEAT IN THE PROGRAM

We recognize the importance of making an informed decision regarding the host institution for your graduate studies – to this end, feel free to request an appointment with your advisor to discuss your options with us further.  Once you have reached a decision, please fill out the ‘intend to enroll' form under the application portal to confirm your seat in our program within four weeks of receiving your admissions offer. This action is accompanied with a $500 non-refundable deposit payment, which is applied toward your first semester tuition statement.  Under unique circumstances, requests for deposit waivers can be sent to [email protected].  

NEW STUDENT QUICK CHECKLIST 

  1. View the academic calendar, among others, to confirm the first day of classes and the last day to add/drop courses under your semester schedule. 
  2. Access here.
  3. Collaborate with your first semester advisor regarding course registration and other aspects of enrollment.

  6. Check your PirateNet account for billing statements and review payment options through the Bursar's Office, [email protected]. Diplomacy scholarship funds will be posted directly into your account by the add/drop date.

  8. Review Seton Hall Immunization Requirements (for students under 31)
  9. Obtain a student parking permit

We will be adding dates soon for the events  below for new graduate students – you will receive a separate email invitation and additional details about each event. It is strongly recommended for you to schedule an individual appointment with your first semester adviser for personalized feedback.

Diplomacy New Graduate Student Orientation Session
A mandatory new cohort launching event will be held the first day of classes. This is a great opportunity to meet your colleagues, deans, faculty, director of career development, student organizations' representatives and more. Event details will be shared with you directly via email.

This is a great opportunity to meet our community members, including: deans, faculty representatives, director of career development, current students, and alumni. The program agenda includes graduate programs and specializations, internship and career opportunities, financial aid, student life and more.


Graduate Student Virtual Open Advising Session
As part of annual advising effort, Dean Ruby will facilitate a graduate-specific open advising session on a first come, first serve basis – offering students an opportunity to review and offer feedback on individual program worksheets in preparation for Fall 2022 course registration.


Diplomacy Pre-boarding e-Orientation – View Prior Event Recording
First semester advisor, Assistant Dean, Catherine Ruby, leads a pre-boarding session regarding registration considerations for your first semester and other details for successful enrollment. Event details will be shared with you directly via email.

PIRATENET - STUDENT PORTAL ACCESS

PirateNet is Seton Hall University's web portal which serves as the single access point for most University information and transactions. Through Piratenet, you can access your email, register for courses, review and accept your financial aid package, view/pay your tuition bill, access the library and Canvas, the University's online classroom. PirateNet also allows you to update your personal information, and access academic transcripts and other important University information.  You should have received a separate Seton Hall e-mail with your log-in credentials.

GET INVOLVED/STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS

Clubs and organizations are not only great resources to students in building a sense of community and camaraderie; they are opportunities for enhancing intellectual pursuits and developing professional skills as well.  Once you begin your studies, we encourage you to participate in School-specific organizations or other university-wide organizations. Every semester there is a campus-wide fair where you may meet with various organizations' representatives.

As a new incoming graduate student, you are automatically a member of the Graduate Diplomacy Council (GDC).  GDC develops and coordinates events, seminars, educational programs, and provides avenues for students to socialize and collaborate on projects.  To get involved, or for more information, contact GDC directly.  You may also request to join the GDC Facebook Group.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

BILLING AND FINANCIAL AID

Students may view their bill online after accessing Bursar Office.

SETON HALL EMAIL ACCOUNT

Every Seton Hall student is assigned a Seton Hall email address.  All official University announcements, including messages from your professors, will be sent to your Seton Hall student email address, so it will be important for you to check this account as often as possible.  Your unique Seton Hall email address is listed on the Main Deck tab in the PirateNet portal.  For more information about your e-mail account, please click here. CANVAS

Canvas is Seton Hall University's online learning management system which contains information for each of your courses and allows you to communicate with your classmates and instructors. Some professors also use Canvas for online discussions, to post course materials, to submit course assignments and to post your grades for assignments throughout the semester.  For more information about Canvas, including student tutorials, please click here.

HEALTH INSURANCE AND IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS

New Jersey state law requires that all full-time students be covered by health insurance. To ensure that all of our students are in compliance with this requirement, Seton Hall University provides group health insurance plans for full-time graduate students, and you will automatically billed for the health insurance plan. However, you are eligible to submit a waiver through the Health Services for more information regarding student health insurance.

STUDENT ID CARDS

Once you have registered for courses, you must obtain a Seton Hall ID card. This card will provide you with access to the University's gates and buildings, and it is used for all transactions through your PirateNet portal, and these funds can be used for the bookstore, vending machines, the cafeteria and at several off-campus locations in the South Orange area.

PURCHASING BOOKS

Once you have registered for courses, you can purchase your books through our University bookstore, which is located on the bottom level of Duffy Hall - learn more here. Students often purchase books (new or used) using outside online sources, or you may also get books using the inter-library borrowing service at the library.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING PERMITS

Seton Hall provides two main transportation services:

If you plan to park your car on campus, you must obtain a parking pass. The Parking Services Office is located in Duffy Hall, Room 63. Please visit Parking Services for more information.

The South Orange train station is located within walking distance to main campus. Students may utilize public transit via NJ Transit trains and buses to travel to New York City or other areas. Full-time college students can save 25% on New Jersey Transit monthly passes.
