Associated Programs

The History department and its faculty, through their teaching and scholarship, are involved in a number of associated interdisciplinary programs within the College of Arts and Sciences.  Please visit their webpages to learn more about them.  Students interested in combining history with a second major or minor in any of these disciplines are invited to speak with their academic advisor.  

Africana Studies

The Africana studies program analyzes the historical and contemporary experiences of people of African descent in the United States, Africa, the Americas, Europe, and wherever communities of African descended people have emerged.  The program utilizes multidisciplinary faculty and community –based expertise to prepare students to become servant leaders by fostering a commitment to rigorous intellectual inquiry and the movement for racial justice and equality.

Catholic Studies

Catholic Studies offers an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum for students of any or no religion who are interested in deepening their knowledge of Catholicism's rich intellectual tradition and living heritage. Combining the study of history, philosophy, diplomacy, theology, literature, art, nursing, the sciences and other disciplines, Catholic Studies focuses on the church's dialogue with culture and encounter with the world.  Students may pursue a major, minor, or certificate.

Italian Studies

Italian Studies at Seton Hall offers an integrated, interdisciplinary approach to the study of Italy and its culture.  It builds on the programs of the Departments of History, Modern Languages and Art, Music and Design. The Italian Studies Program also receives important institutional support from the Valente Italian Library and the University Archives.

Latin American and Latino/a Studies

The major and minor in Latin American and Latino/Latina Studies (LALS) at Seton Hall University afford students an interdisciplinary path to study Latin American and Latino culture and history. LALS students master subjects and skills necessary for several fields including business, public service, healthcare, social work and education.

Middle East and North African Studies

The College of Arts and Sciences has created the Minor in Middle Eastern Studies in order to provide an interdisciplinary overview encompassing the history, cultures, religious traditions and political institutions of the lands stretching from Morocco to Iran and from Turkey to the Southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula in the period from the rise of Islam to the present day. The program provides students with a deeper understanding of on-going events and processes in the region by exposing them to a broad and balanced range of courses from a variety of disciplines.

Russian and East European Studies

The Russian and East European Studies Program brings together students and faculty from a range of different disciplines around a common interest in the cultures, languages, history and political institutions of Eastern Europe and the territories of the former USSR. Students minoring in the program receive a comprehensive interdisciplinary training preparing them for a life-long engagement with this intriguing and important region. In addition to the academic offerings students in the program will have the opportunity to take part in a wide variety of cultural activities including lectures, forums, films, field trips and our study abroad program in St. Petersburg.

Study Abroad Experience

Working in close collaboration with the Study Abroad Office, Catholic Studies Program, Slavic Club, Italian Studies Program and others, the history department sponsors a number of successful international travel programs, including trips to England, Russia, Italy, Poland, and Ireland. Students in history are also encouraged to pursue a semester or year abroad through programs offered by accredited institutions.  

Women and Gender Studies

The Women and Gender Studies program offers minor in Women and  Studies based on a series of interdisciplinary courses in such fields as English, Sociology, Political Science, and History (among others).
