Employment of Temporary Workers

All temporary hires must be made through one of the University's preferred temporary agencies. Temporary workers may not be placed on the University's payroll.

  • Temporary workers who are covering for administrative and non-union staff positions may be hired for a maximum of six months.
  • Temporary workers who are covering for Local 153 positions may be hired for a maximum of 60 calendar days, unless the temporary worker is replacing an employee who is on an approved leave of absence or is assisting with a special project about which Local 153 has been notified.
  • Temporary workers who are covering for Local 68 positions may be hired for a maximum of one year.

After six months, or the amount of time specified in the bargaining unit contract, the temporary worker must be released or placed into a regular University position.

Procedures

Departments that wish to hire a temporary worker must first obtain the approval of the Hiring Review Committee (HRC). Upon approval by the HRC, please download a copy of the Request for Temporary Staffing Assignment and follow the instructions on the form.

Special arrangements can be made in which a temporary worker is permitted to work for a period of two weeks prior to HRC approval, however, if HRC approval is not obtained, the temporary worker must be immediately released following notification of the outcome of the HRC meeting. Please contact Victoria Gomez, employment specialist, at (973) 761-9178 or [email protected] for more information regarding urgent temporary needs.

Upon receipt of the Request for Temporary Staffing Assignment, Human Resources will contact the University's preferred temporary agencies. Two to three suitable candidates will be identified for a position. Human Resources will then share information regarding the candidates with the hiring manager and allow him or her to select the most appropriate candidate for the position. Upon selection, Human Resources will finalize the details of the temporary assignment with the agency and a confirmation email will be sent to the hiring manager.

In order to arrange computer and email access for the temporary worker, the hiring manager will need to log into PirateNet and click on the "My Work" tab. At the bottom of the screen, click on "Request a Temporary Account" and complete the required information.
