ePortfolio at SHU

Dedicated to the effective use of technology in the classroom and the promotion of best practices for teaching and learning, Seton Hall University has embraced the use of electronic portfolios (ePortfolios) as a university initiative since 2003.

ePortfolios represent a more holistic picture of student growth than grades on a transcript. Serving a multiple of uses from advisement, to accreditation, to representation of best work, electronic portfolios offer the student a vehicle to tell their own story, encouraging creative expression and identity. Students are given the opportunity, through electronic portfolios to take ownership of their educational path via the collection, reflection and celebration process.
Seton Hall University is currently researching and implementing the use of a variety of tools for the creation of electronic portfolios for a wide range of educational capacities. Current projects include the development of student, faculty and department portfolios. Some examples of ePortfolios at Seton Hall include the following:

Freshman Studies ePortfolio
Tools: Blackboard Portfolio and Project Sophia Portfolio
The Freshman Studies Portfolio Project utilizes the University Life course to provide students with the opportunity to create personalized reflective accounts of their first year experiences.

College of Education and Human Services ePortfolio

Undergraduate teacher education in the College of Education and Human Services requires seniors to complete a standards-based portfolio in their clinical seminar course. During the fall 2010 semester seminar faculty piloted the use of Adobe Acrobat 9 with seniors as the means for creating an electronic standards portfolio. The ease of use and share capabilities were considered two of the strongest factors behind its use. In addition, faculty working with underclassmen in science methods also piloted the use of the Adobe portfolio as a means of organizing science content and materials.

English Department Senior Assessment ePortfolio

English majors begin keeping an Assessment Portfolio as soon as they declare their major, which is handed in at the end of their senior year to the chair of the Department of English. Portfolios are reviewed by a rotating committee of Department of English faculty in an effort to evaluate graduating students and continuous assessment of the English program. The Assessment Portfolio is created and submitted through Blackboard. The Senior Assessment Portfolios include:

  • Three graded research papers reflecting the student’s best work in the English major from three of the four required advanced elective categories
  • A written self-assessment
