Joint Bachelor’s/M.D. Program Requirements for Admission

Entrance to the joint-degree program is only available in the fall semester. Incoming freshmen need:

  • Minimum GPA 3.6 or higher (unweighted)
  • Minimum Test score – ACT composite of 30 or 2 part SAT score 1400 (not less than 650 on ERW or M section)

In order to successfully transition to the M.D. portion of the program, students must meet the following continuation requirements:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 at the end freshman year, 3.6 cumulative GPA at the end of sophomore year and a 3.7 cumulative GPA at the end of junior and senior year.
  • Earn at least a B or better in all of the prerequisite courses on your first attempt
  • Earn an MCAT score in the top 20th percentile. The MCAT must be taken no later than September 30th of the year before you expect to begin medical school. If you repeat your MCAT, all scores will be considered.
  • Submit your application and all required materials to the School of Medicine no later than November 1 of your senior year, using the American Medical College Application Service application and a SOM Secondary Application
  • Establish residency in New Jersey before the end of your junior year at Seton Hall
  • Have a successful interview with the School of Medicine admissions committee in the fall of your senior year at Seton Hall University in which the many other factors to be considered in the SOM’s holistic application process will be explored
  • Not engage in any unbecoming, unethical or unprofessional conduct as evaluated by the SOM Admissions Committee.

Even if you are not successful in remaining in the program, you may still apply for admission into the SOM in your senior year as part of the regular admissions program.

This program does not guarantee you a seat in the School of Medicine (SOM), it guarantees you an interview with the SOM which is a very big advantage as it is often difficult for students to make it to the interview round to be considered for entrance to medical school. To be formally admitted to the School of Medicine, all students must submit all required application materials and be interviewed in their fourth year of undergraduate study by the School of Medicine Committee on Admissions. Students admitted to the joint-degree program who meet all of the academic criteria outlined above will be put forward to the School of Medicine for an interview.

The School of Medicine will make a final determination on admission to the M.D. program based on the interview. The interview is not merely a series of questions but an opportunity to demonstrate the depth of your skills, experiences and interest in the field of medicine. It is important that you use your time at Seton Hall to engage in activities that will help you speak to these items during your interview. During your undergraduate studies you should engage in activities like research, volunteer work, community service, shadowing a physician, cross-cultural experiences, etc. These experiences will help you develop a strong resume for medical school and strengthen the content of your interview. During the interview the School of Medicine will be specifically assessing the following attributes:

  1. Emotional Intelligence
  2. Resilience
  3. Servant Leadership
  4. Intellectual Pursuit
  5. Integrity
  6. Passion for the field of medicine
  7. Skill sets:
    • Self-motivated
    • Adaptable
    • Takes Initiative
    • Personal responsibility and accountability
    • Written and oral communication
    • Team management aptitude

The criteria outlined above are for students entering Seton Hall in the fall of 2021. Criteria for future start terms may vary.
